Greatest sporting achievement:
Qualifying for the Sydney 2000 Olympics.
Best piece of advice you have ever been given:
It’s easier to get to the top, than to stay there!
Favourite Endura product and why:
Rehydration Performance Fuel (pineapple flavour) I love the taste, it’s nice and refreshing plus it keeps me hydrated to perform.
How did you get into your chosen sport?
I entered a Triathlon with a few mates from high school and was hooked after that.
How important is diet and sports nutrition supplements to your performance?
As athletes we ask so much from our bodies, so it’s important to balance that out with the best fuel for your body. You don’t see a racing car running on the cheapest fuel it can get, so you should treat your body the same and refuel with the best fuel/nutrition/food you can.
What do you normally eat and drink on a typical training day?
Most days I start with Endura Optimizer (Chocolate is currently my favourite flavour) before training. After training I’ll either have some quinoa or buckwheat cooked with some veggies. I do visit my mates café regularly, so I mix it up from the menu there. Dinner usually consists of some fresh salads or cooked veggies with some protein (fish or meat). I sneak some dark chocolate in during the day too.
Where will we find you when you are not training or competing?
At my mate's café or kicking around my farm.
What is your best training tip?
Find out what works best for you and do that. Don’t just follow like sheep, because it works for someone else, doesn’t mean it’s great for you too.
What are your goals for the next year?
Qualify for and top 10 at Hawaiian Ironman.
Who inspires you and why?
I’m inspired by anyone who goes out of there comfort zone. Not necessarily in sport, but in any aspect in life.
How long would you normally spend training each week?
20 - 35hrs.
What is your favourite 'before race' meal?
Roast vegetables mixed with fresh vegetable salad.
Best nutritional advice?
Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food - Hippocrates.
How do you stay motivated with training?
It’s great when it’s just there, but when it disappears my training partners are generally what keep me going.
The thing I love the most about being an athlete is...
The endorphin release you receive from training or racing.
What is a common mistake made in your sport?
More training equals better results.
Toughest experience in your career / What have you learnt from it?
Finishing 34th at the Sydney 2000 Olympics. I was considered one of the favourites and in the best shape of my career. I was very result focused and forgot to follow the process needed to perform. I was pleased to rectify this for the world championships the following year, coming away with the win.
What is going through your head the moment before you start a race?
Get as close to the front of the swim pack as possible.
In five years time I will be...
Racing age group?
What one or two things do you currently do in your training that are keys to your success?
Bouncing ideas of my coach/mentor. Learning from each experience I have from racing and tweaking my program/racing accordingly.
